To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we
are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic
and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.

Unfortunately the proud tradition of American politics translates most readily to "the best government money can buy." The golden rule is, he (or she)who has the gold makes the rules. Senator Clinton's campaign has deep pockets, and it's unlikely that anyone will come along to challenge that. Personally I would much prefer that Al Gore were to throw his hat in the ring, but the odds seem stacked against it. :(
BTW, I imagine the reight-wing pundits from Lower Left Blogistan will be having a field day tomorrow over Gore's appearance at the Oscars - since he was neither the director or producer of An Inconvenient Truth, he is vulnerable to accusations of grandstanding.
