"Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories. "
Thomas Jefferson, 1781

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. "
Dwight D. Eisenhower

Four.
Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg."

As my 10 year old would say....duh! Sadly, their defenders will spin this one away too.

I love Conason's article. It's well-written, angry but not blindly so, and is a careful summation of the failures of the worst presidency in U.S. history.

But it's not the first article of its kind. There were perhaps millions just like it leading up to the election. The people needing to read articles such as this not only don't read articles – they probably don't read at all.

One of the worst things this presidency has shown us is not just the stupidity and callousness of the people in charge, but the utter mediocrity and small-mindedness of those that voted them into office.

I never used to think this way, but I think there needs to be a miniumum I.Q. for voting in this country. Anyone that couldn't see any of this coming and voted for Bush doesn't deserve that right.

It may sound fascistic, but sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. Liberals (and I am one of them) have become completely ineffectual. We can write articles until the cows come home. Bush's stupid smirk won a presidency twice because that's what a majority of this country looks for in a leader: a good ol' boy with a shit-eating grin and a cowboy hat.
