"Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories. "
Thomas Jefferson, 1781

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. "
Dwight D. Eisenhower

"How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg?
Four.
Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg."

Fear Factor for Elections

What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage.
Cowardly Lion
I think by now people are tired and pissed off at being played for cowards by Bush. Fear, terrorists, Bin Laden, we aren't safe yet, do you feel safe?
Let's put it this way, I'm not scared. Fuck Osama, fuck the the terrorists and fuck...

What Bush dosen't say:
From Dan Froomkin
He doesn't say we won't allow ourselves to be terrorized, and we won't be afraid. (That would run counter to the central Republican game plan for the mid-term election.) He doesn't say that in our zeal to fight the terrorists, we won't give up the qualities that make America great. He acknowledges no mistakes, he calls for no sacrifice, he refuses to reach out to those who disagree with him.
Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
Mark Twain
