"Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories. "
Thomas Jefferson, 1781

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. "
Dwight D. Eisenhower

Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg."

Using Terry Schiavo

The Christian conservatives control the republican congress, and the republican congress will use anybody for political gain. Using Terry Schiavo to appease the evangelical right is contemptible. Republicans have argued for states rights on all issues except where they can pander to the religious right. The Washington Post reports: An unsigned one-page memo, distributed to Republican senators, said the debate over Schiavo would appeal to the party's base, or core, supporters. The memo singled out Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), who is up for reelection next year and is potentially vulnerable in a state President Bush won last year. "This is an important moral issue and the pro-life base will be excited that the Senate is debating this important issue," said the memo, which was reported by ABC News and later given to The Washington Post. "This is a great political issue, because Senator Nelson of Florida has already refused to become a cosponsor and this is a tough issue for Democrats." Terry Schiavo is being used for political gain. It is only because of the enormous press coverage congress will get that they grandstand. Unfortunately taking Terry to federal court will not change her condition.

As Governor of Texas, in 1999, George Bush signed a bill that gave doctors the right to "pull the plug" on a patient that had no chance of recovery. Even if the guardian of the patient wants the patient kept alive the doctors are still allowed to pull the plug. The guardians are given 10 days to find another caretaker for the patient.
