Second Pre-War Memo Leaked
The Washington Post has reported on a second pre-war memo leaked from Great Britain. The first one was leaked at the beginning of May and has received little attention in the U.S. media but the rest of the World has not let go of it. This new one talks about the U.S. lack of planning for a post -war Iraq. Both of these memos together show that Bush was determined to go to war, sell the Congress, the United Nations and the American public on fixed WMD intelligence and not worry about the aftermath. Paul Wolfowitz is quoted in the article from 2003 saying containment of Hussein the previous 12 years had cost "slightly over $30 billion," adding, "I can't imagine anyone here wanting to spend another $30 billion to be there for another 12 years." As of May, the Congressional Research Service estimated that Congress has approved $208 billion for the war in Iraq since 2003.This would be a low ball estimate of the cost to the American taxpayers. Nobody mentions that we have lost more than 1700 American lives and thousands horribly wounded. With this kind of planning can you imagine what would have happened if WMD had been there and fallen into the insurgents hands? We would have had a disaster beyond anybodies worst nightmare. Congressman John Conyers has written a letter to Bush demanding answers. He posted the letter on his web sight and asked the public to sign the letter. He has received over 500,000 signatures. The public deserves and will get answers. |
