Hearing on The Downing Street Minutes
Today Rep. John Conyers, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member, conducted a hearing on "The Downing Street Minutes and Pre-war intelligence" at the Capital in the Wasserman Room. If you are still not informed about the "memo" (this was first reported in The Times of London, May 1st 2005), I suggest going to http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/ and get caught up. The main idea here is that Bush was determined to go to war by the summer of 2002 and was fixing the intelligence around this policy. The memo was from a top secret meeting with the United Kingdoms Prime Minister Tony Blair and his top advisors; they are the "minutes" of that meeting. Read the Memo here: Downing Street Memo. This issue has a serious possibility of blowing up into a full blown investigation of how and why the Bush White House pushed this country into an unnecessary war. The forum was shown live on CSPAN 3 and should still be available on the web at c-span.org (high speed connection required). While this forum was being conducted CNN, MSNBC and FOX NEWS showed yet another high speed car chase live from southern California. After the hearing a delegation delivered a letter to the White House (signed by 560,000 citizens and 102 members of Congress) requesting President Bush answer to the questions raised by the memo's that have been leaked (there are now several "memo's" that have been leaked to the UK press). Yes, at least 560,000 people are paying attention and were not watching the Jackson trial or a car chase but are trying to hold our elected officials responsible for taking this country to war. A war that was pushed upon the American people using scare tactics and a deliberate campaign of deception. |
