Bush has quietly lifted a ban on "training" South American Militaries. South Americans have been VOTING for candidates from the left and from socialist parties. It is there choice to elect who they feel is best for them. How does Bush deal with fair elections when they don't go his way? Send in the military. Who are the people these militaries need to take action against? From USA Today: U.S. will train Latin American militariesThere is also a discussion and more information at On Deadline New York University professor Greg Grandin was interviewed on Democracy NOW back on May 11th. No wonder the US is despised. These neocon chickenhawks running this country want the entire world to be wingers. Just another in a LONG list of dirty deeds.
HCG, if Bush had not made such a disaster out of Iraq there might be a bigger military focus on South America by now.
Why can't we simply leave other countries the hell alone instead of imposing our brand of democracy? This is truly disgusting given the history we've played with death squads, raping and killing nuns, military coup de tas, etc.
The same people that were involved in Iran Contra have been in power since Bush stole the presidency. This makes me either want to scream at the top of my lungs or curl up and weep.
What tragic news, researcher.
Gracie, hopefully Gates will be grilled on Latin America during his confirmation. At least to make the public aware.
The effectiveness of US foreign policy from a human rights standpoint can be measured by the respective records of leftist Salvador Allende and Augusto Pinochet of Chile. The former was assassinated and deposed with the help of the CIA. That made way for Pinochet to commit the most egregious human rights abuses in the western hemisphere.
