Cervical cancer vaccine
From NewScientist.com: Human papilloma virus (HPV) is sexually transmitted which is the cause of most cases of cervical cancer. A new vaccine is about to be approved which can prevent this disease if girls are vaccinated before they become sexually active. Now religious groups are opposing the vaccine because it gives the wrong message to engage in premarital sex. "Abstinence is the best way to prevent HPV," says Bridget Maher of the Family Research Council, a leading Christian lobby. "Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a license to engage in premarital sex," Maher claims, though it is arguable how many young women have even heard of the virus. This is an incredibly foolish attitude. This vaccination could be given in early childhood when all other vaccinations are given. Just leave religion out of the argument and save lives. |
