"Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories. "
Thomas Jefferson, 1781

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. "
Dwight D. Eisenhower

Rep Curt Weldon Under Investigation

Just one more for the road. Well, he was on the 20 most corrupt list already.

Rep. Weldon Probed Over Contracts for His Daughter

McClatchy Newspapers

The Justice Department is investigating whether Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.) traded his political influence for lucrative lobbying and consulting contracts for his daughter, according to sources with direct knowledge of the inquiry.

The FBI has formally referred the matter to the department's Public Integrity Section for additional scrutiny. At issue are Weldon's efforts between 2002 and 2004 to aid two Russian companies and two Serbian brothers with ties to former Yugoslavian president Slobodan Milosevic, a federal law enforcement official said.

The Russian companies and a Serbian foundation run by the brothers' family each hired a firm co-owned by Weldon's daughter, Karen, for fees totaling nearly $1 million a year, public records show.

Karen Weldon was 28 and lacked consulting experience when she and Charles Sexton, a Weldon ally and longtime Republican leader in Delaware County, Pa., created the firm Solutions North America Inc. in 2002. Both are registered with the Justice Department as representatives of foreign clients

Does it ever end? It would probably be easier to have a list of politicians that were NOT involved in some sort of criminal activity.

Contractors are making a fortune under this administration thanks to Bush & company. Wars and natural disaster are good for business, bad for the people. Great line in MM's documentary. Thanks for the updates.

The lobbyist money has to be stopped. I'm all for public financed campaigns, in the long run it will cost us less.

Blogger Gracie said ... (6:26 PM) :

Agreed, the lobbyist ARE our government. Washington has become nothing more than a revolving door with these groups.

Bookmarked that link, thanks for the info. I'm sounded more cynical than usual today, not to worry, it's only temporary. :)

OOPs, let me try that again.

I'm sounding more cynical than usual today, not to worry, it's only temporary!

Cynical, it's impossible not to be when you're talking politics. After Election Day I'll take a break for about a day. Then we'll have to hold the Dem's feet to the fire.

Blogger Gracie said ... (7:28 PM) :

Preparing for the attacks that are soon to be launched against the Dems by the Rove machine does add to the overall anxiety. Like I've said, nothing would surprise when it comes to the actions of those in power, absolutely nothing.

Blogger researcher said ... (8:06 PM) :

I know, what's he waiting for? If he's got something it's about time we see it because BushCo has been taking some hits.

Seriously, that list Gracie spoke of would be amazing.
The scandals just keep on coming. Of course, IF the media had actually done their job and not simply took those stenographic notes, we would have had a steady trickle of these exposes, as opposed to this continual bombardment we've seen in the last couple of weeks.
It has gotten to the point that even saying the word "republican" conjures up immediate images of liars, thieves, bandits, and murderers. Nice bunch. Not.

Blogger researcher said ... (9:38 PM) :

You are right about the press coverage HillCountryGal. The investigative reporting seems to be a thing of the past. Not until the evidence becomes so apparent you trip over it do we start hearing anything. But it sure is rolling downhill now.
To me “republican” conjures up a chimp in a suit that’s lost in a bubble.

Blogger Pam said ... (11:02 PM) :

me too, researcher, me too (the chimp in a bubble thing).

Blogger researcher said ... (11:23 PM) :

Sounds like a good idea for photoshop.
